By Joseph Vasquez
The 2023 TSL Grand Final took place over the weekend with the Kingborough Tigers and North Launceston battling it out at North Hobart Oval for this year’s premiership honours.
North Launceston made a strong start in the Grand Final, kicking 3.2 to the Tigers’ 1.2 in the first term. However, Kingborough hit back in the second quarter, kicking 4.4 and holding the Northern Bombers goalless to lead by 15 points at the main change. In the third term, the Tigers remained in control and kicked away to a 25-point lead at three-quarter-time. In the final quarter, Kingborough did not register a goal, however North Launceston were unable to capitalise on their opportunities, kicking 1.5. Ultimately, the Tigers were victorious, winning 8.8.56 to 5.11.41 and clinching the 2023 TSL premiership.
Kieran Lovell was the standout amongst the Kingborough outfit, winning the Darrel Baldock Medal as best afield after kicking three goals and amassing 20 disposals. Additionally, Lachie Clifford (one goal, five tackles, six marks, 12 clearances, 17 contested possessions, 30 disposals) and Nic Baker (one goal, seven contested possessions, 19 disposals) were also excellent in yellow and black.
For the Northern Bombers, playing coach Brad Cox-Goodyer lead from the front, kicking three majors and accumulating 26 disposals, and Blade Sulzberger (one goal, six tackles, nine clearances, 12 contested possessions, 20 disposals) and Ben Simpson (six one-percenters, eight tackles, 15 contested possessions, 20 disposals) were brilliant for North Launceston in a nail-biting defeat.
