Round 15 of the Wrest Point Tasmanian State League Women’s season saw Glenorchy return from the bye to take on Burnie at KGV, and Launceston defeat Clarence for the first time this season at Blundstone Arena, writes TSL W Digital Reporter Olivia Clayton.

Glenorchy v. Burnie (KGV) – 1:00pm
Glenorchy returned from the bye in style against the Burnie Dockers, running away with an emphatic 14.19 (103) to 1.0 (6) win in round fifteen at KGV.
Glenorchy kicked 2.1 in the first quarter and then 2.5 in the second term to open up a 24-point lead at the main change after Emily Duncombe kicked the Dockers only goal of the game in the second quarter.
The third quarter saw the Pies kick 2.8 before running the game out superbly with 8.5 in the final stanza to finish with a 97-point win.
Mackie Sutcliffe kicked four goals for Glenorchy, Nietta Lynch three, Sandy Eaton and Thomasa Corrie two and Hannah Smith, Meg Jacobs and Sarah Skinner one each.
Glenorchy coach, Craig Grace was impressed with how his side improved as the game went on.
“We started pretty slow and found it difficult to get past Burnie’s extra in defence but as the game went on we adjusted and moved the ball really well.
“Our last quarter was easily our best for the game – kicking eight goals – and involved some of our best ball movement for the season,” Grace said.
The Pies best players were Nietta Lynch, Elise Barwick, Mackie Sutcliffe, Sarah Skinner, Brieanna Barwick and Holly Ryan.
“Mackie Sutcliffe with four goals across half forward continued on with her strong season and Elise Barwick through the middle had the ball on a string running rings around the Burnie midfield,” Grace said.
Burnie coach, Richard Mulcahy, stated that “Sundays game was a massive challenge for the girls against the top team with the big road trip and no bench. We played some great team footy in the first three quarters but struggled to finish off our good work upfield.”
“Losing the defensive pressure and ball winning ability of Chloe Haines, with lung bruising in the third quarter, really hurt the team and Chloe, as shown by the blowout on the scoreboard in the last when the Pies dominated.”
The Dockers best players were Lauren Stevenson, Libby Haines, Chloe Haines, Samantha Langmaid, Emily Duncombe and Emily Doig.
“The young team, despite everything, pulled together, kept a positive attitude and gave it their all,” Mulcahy said.
Glenorchy remains in first place on the ladder, three wins clear of Clarence in second, while Burnie remains in fifth place, one game behind the Tigers.
In round 16 Glenorchy will have their last bye of the season and Burnie will host Launceston at Wivenhoe Showgrounds.

Clarence v. Launceston (Blundstone Arena) – 1:30pm
Launceston 5.8 (38) defeated Clarence 4.4 (28) for the first time this season at Blundstone Arena in round fifteen.
Launceston player, Camilla Taylor, kicked the first goal of the game before teammate Courtney Webb also hit the scoreboard to open up a 13-point buffer for the Blues at quarter time.
This quarter time difference remained in the second half after Courtney Webb’s second goal was answered by Tiarna Ford, who kicked a goal after the half time siren to bring the deficit back to 13.
The Blues kicked four behinds in the third quarter with Abbey Green kicking their only goal. Clarence decreased the margin late in the term to just 11 points at three quarter time after a goals from Grace Mitchell and Darcy Elliston.
Abbey Green kicked another goal for Launceston in the final term,and despite Tiarna Ford registering her second for the hosts, the Blues had done enough to come away with a 10-point win.
Launceston coach, Alex Gibbons was pleased with the result.
“Sunday’s match was a great spectacle of female football in a fast, high skilled game played at Blundstone Arena.
“Both teams had patches of play throughout the game where they were on top which equated to an equal amount of inside 50’s each over the course of the game. We had a bit more power up front and finished the better on the day,” he said.
“First half I felt we were really impressive in all aspects. Third quarter I felt we could have put them away but kicked 1.4 and Clarence, to their credit, came back hard.”
Launceston’s only injury concern out of the match was Courtney Webb, but Gibbons is confident the star will be ok for round 16.
“Courtney suffered a sore back but it is minor and will be right for next game. We had a late exclusion of Kate Mclaughlin night before the game and she is expected to be out for another week with an ankle injury.”
The Blues best players were Chanette Thuringer, Amy Halaby, Courtney Stanley, Emma Manix-geeves, Camilla Taylor and Ashlee Carey.
“Our defensive group were really good and that was marshaled by Chanette Thuringer. Amy Halaby and Courtney Stanley did a mountain of work for us over the ground.”
Clarence coach, Andy Smith, said Sunday’s game “was a tight fought contest with both sides gaining momentum at times during the game.”
“We fielded a very young and inexperienced side. I was very pleased with the effort and commitment the girls showed,” Smith said.
The Roos only injury concern out of the match occurred when Rachel Archer rolled her ankle late in the game.
Clarence’s best players were Rachel Archer, Loveth Ochayi, Tahlia Bortignon, Nicole Bresnehan, Katherine Johnson and Tiarna Ford.
“Rachel Archer and Kath Johnson were good in defence. Loveth Ochayi had an impact when she went into the ruck in the second half. Tahlia Bortignon showed she will be a player of the future.”
At the end of round 15 Clarence and Launceston both sit on eight wins each, with the Roos finishing slightly higher in second based on percentage, and Launceston following in third.
Launceston will play Burnie at Wivenhoe Showgrounds in round 16 and Clarence will host the Tigers at Geilston Bay.
