Wrest Point TSLW Round 1 Preview

After months of anticipation, the second season of the Wrest Point Tasmanian State League Women’s competition is almost upon us, with round one set to get off to a thrilling start with the Grand Final rematch between Launceston and Glenorchy, and a big clash between Tigers FC and Clarence, writes TSL W reporter Olivia Clayton.

Sunday 22nd April

Launceston v. Glenorchy (Windsor Park) – 12:00pm

Last Time They Met: Launceston 8.6 (54) def. Glenorchy 5.3 (33) – Grand Final, 2017 at UTAS Stadium

Launceston and Glenorchy are both expected to come out fighting in this Grand Final rematch at Windsor Park.

Last time they met was in the famous Grand Final encounter in which the Blues overran the Magpies to run out 21-point winners.

Launceston saw goals kicked by Naomi Celebre (2), Georgia Hill (2), Abbey Green (1), Emma Manix-Geeves (1), Molly Clark (1) and Courtney Webb (1).

Sandy Eaton starred for the Magpies in the Grand Final, kicking four goals, while Nietta Lynch also kicked one.

Courtney Webb was recognised for her efforts being named best on ground in the Grand Final.

Grand Final rematches are always hard-fought affairs, and the million dollar question we will wait to see the answer of, is whether Launceston will be able to come out on top again?

Tigers v. Clarence (Twin Ovals) – 12:00pm

Last Time They Met: Clarence 12.6 (78) def. Tigers 0.2 (2) – Round 13, 2017 at Twin Ovals

Finishing in third place as minor premiers in 2017, Clarence is set to take on the Tigers, who finished fifth at the Twin Ovals to start the new season.

Last time they met in round 13, 2017 Clarence kicked an astonishing 12 goals with Maddy Smith kicking 6, Shannon Harris 2 and Sophie Pennicott, Jacinta Limbrick, Grace Mitchell and Zoie Crawford all kicking one each.

Nicole Bresnehan has been joined by former Tiger Loveth Ochayi at Clarence.

Unfortunately, the Tigers were unable to score any goals against Clarence, only managing two behinds.

Clarence will have a point to prove after not making the Grand Final despite such a strong season, and this game will see a strong Clarence take on a determined Tigers outfit who are set to show how much they’ve improved across the off-season.
