North blow away Lauderdale
Written by Andrew Johnston, Row Hancock
The battle of the bombers was convincingly won by North Launceston, as they reminded the TSL they are still a force to be reckoned with. The Northern Bombers overcame a goalless first quarter to storm home over Lauderdale to the tune of 61 points, at Lauderdale Oval.
Lauderdale shot out of the blocks with five unanswered goals in a dominant opening stanza from the hosts. Thor Boscott was a stand out early for Lauderdale, kicking two first quarter goals, setting the tone in his 100th match.
With the wind at their back in the second quarter, North responded with seven unanswered to take a 13 point lead into the main break. Young gun Tarryn Thomas was outstanding for the Bombers in the second quarter revival with a goal, some slick movement and a number of key contested possessions.
Overall, the wind had a telling influence on the clash, it took until the 13th goal of the game for a major to be registered at the clubhouse end. The third quarter was an arm wrestle, with the teams going goal for goal throughout the quarter. The game also showed a distinct increase in intensity, with both clubs contested possession and tackle counts drastically increasing.
The fourth quarter saw North dominate and kick away to an unassailable lead. The Northern Bombers kicked seven last quarter goals, including three in the first four minutes. Forward Zach Burt kicked two of his four goals in the period, putting the icing on the cake for the visitors.
Coach Tom Couch, had a big impact in his debut for North Launceston with two tremendous goals, he was extremely pleased with the team’s effort beyond quarter time.
“I’m not sure if the boys were still in preseason mode, but we didn’t need to say anything as coaches at quarter time, they knew it themselves.”
Couch also heaped praise on the clubs new players, including Bart McCulloch, on his return to TSL football.
“Bart, playing his first game, I thought he was outstanding, especially in the second quarter.”
North next week take on Hobart City at the University of Tasmania Stadium, and Couch says the team are looking forward to playing on their home turf.
Lauderdale coach Darren Winter was less than impressed with his team’s performance. Whilst Lauderdale have the bye in round two, Winter says there will be no rest for his team.
“Unfortunately the players won’t get a breather now, they’ve been put on notice and we certainly won’t stand for that kind of performance.”
