Bombers Surge to Victory

By Andrew Johnston

A six goal final quarter has seen North Launceston run over the top of Hobart City, winning by 37 points at University of Tasmania Stadium on Saturday night.

Poor kicking from both teams kept the game even until three quarter time, with only 11 points separating the sides but the Bombers kicked away in the final quarter to ensure a comfortable victory.

Hobart City, who were looking to regain some form after a poor opening performance against Glenorchy, had the upper hand in the opening quarter, taking a six point lead into the first break. Will Campbell and Jayden Charlton were impressive in the clinches.

Bart McCulloch continued his impressive start to season 2017, and Connor Pearton went forward and kicked one of his two goals, helping give North the lead at half time.

The third quarter, whilst low scoring, saw a spiteful edge come into the game, with a number of heavy knocks by both sides across a fiery quarter. Hayden Goss was injured in a tackle late in the third quarter, and did not return, leaving North down a player for the remainder of the game.

But the Bombers clicked into another gear in the final quarter, outscoring the Demons by five goals to run away to a 39 point win.

North Launceston coach Tom Couch was full of praise for his opposition.

“We knew after last week they would respond…they really brought it up to us.”

Couch was proud of his leaders and their ability to stand up to see the Bombers comfortably.

“It was really about character, and the boys stood up….Coxy, Walshy, Lockhart. Tommy Bennett, it was terrific…”

Hobart City backline coach Richard Robinson was happy with their overall response following a disappointed round one.

“We were obviously looking for a response. All players and coaches we were all disappointed with what happened last week. We had a good week on the track, and came up with a good mindset. Obviously the first three quarters we were quite good but obviously you need to play four quarters, especially against a quality side that’s well coached.”

Next week Hobart City Demons face the Tigers in an interesting tussle and the Bombers face their fierce rivals, Launceston.
